Brisk Autumn Morn by Erich Fritz

Original: 16" x 20" acrylic painting on masonite
This piece came about after talking to a friend of mine, who collects art work and has an entire wall covered with different artist's work. He told me he wanted a picture of a horse's rear end. I told him I could do that and started planning the piece. Out in the pasture, with camera in hand, using my wife’s quarter horse as a model, I ended up with this shot as my final favorite. The horse was painted first and then a simple, blue toned background, which looked bland. In thinking about what I could do to enliven it, I came up with the idea of the pictograph after looking through one of my favorite artist's works. The war paint and feathers were added to the horse in the foreground to tie the whole thing together.
